RECTIFIERS :

Thyristorised :

These units are available in combination of either Thyristor on primary and diodes on secondary or back to back, i.e. Thyristor's both on primary and secondary. Output ripple content is fairly high, between 20% and 30% unless special chokes / filters are used and which make the system expensive. Further, in the event of electrical shorting, expensive Thyristor's are to be replaced.

Advantages :

i. More efficiency.
ii. Faster response to auto process control systems.
iii. More compact construction compared to conventional.

Disadvantages :

i. Highly susceptible to external short circuits.
ii. Generates high rate of ripple on DC output.
iii. Maintenance easy but expensive.
